Post-14 STEM Education: Developments and Issues
The STEM Advisory Forum event was held on 21 November 2008 at One Great George Street, venue of the Institute of Civil Engineers and we are pleased to say that it was a great success.
The event covered a range of STEM issues. We started with a lively input from Sir Brian Follett on graduate supply. This was followed by break out groups focusing on the same issue. The break out groups allowed delegates to voice their views on the graduate supply issues facing STEM subjects in an informal and relaxed atmosphere. A summary of the notes from the break out groups is available to view below.
After the break out groups had finished, delegates had three shorter inputs to listen to which also allowed for questions. The first input was by Hugh Lawlor, Chair of the Science Diploma Development Partnership who discussed the purpose and principles behind the Diploma in Science. Matthew Harrison, Director of Education Programmes at The Royal Academy of Engineering then spoke about work on the Engineering Diploma in an Inner City school. Finally we had an update on Mathematics Qualifications for 14-19 year olds by Mary Curnock Cook, Director Qualifications and Skills Division at the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA).
The feedback from delegates was positive and any suggestions that were made for future STEM Advisory Forum events will be noted when planning for our next event which will be held in spring 2009.
