STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

WHO ARE WE?

The Government aims to develop a strong supply of scientists, engineers and technologists by achieving a 'step change' in:

  • The quality of science teachers and lecturers in every school, college and university;
  • The results for students studying science at GCSE level;
  • The numbers choosing STEM subjects in post-16 education and in higher education (HE);
  • The proportion of better qualified students pursuing Research and Development Careers;
  • The proportion of ethnic minority and women participants in HE.

The Government's STEM Programme works towards a number of priorities set out in the 'Science and Innovation Investment Framework 2004-2014' and the subsequent 'Next Steps'. Policy responsibility for these commitments currently lies across a number of directorates within DfE and BIS.

The STEM High Level Strategy Group - with senior membership from across DfE, BIS and external stakeholders - provides strategic advice to help the Government to drive forward its commitments for improving the supply of STEM skills.

STEM ADVISORY FORUM

The STEM Advisory Forum enables two way communications between the DfE and BIS High Level Strategy Group and Advisory Forum members. It has an important role to play in giving members of the wider STEM community the opportunity to receive information and feedback on policy and delivery developments, express their views and contribute to policy formulation and development.

The Forum provides the opportunity for all of those interested in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics education to contribute their views on the STEM agenda. The views expressed on this website will be used to help inform the Department for Education and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills in taking forward the Government's STEM agenda.

THE STEM ADVISORY FORUM TEAM

Nord Anglia runs the STEM Advisory Forum on behalf of the DfE. We maintain the website and work with members of our Inner Circle to keep the website constantly up to date with any STEM issues.

Gemma Marlowe is the Web and Communications Coordinator, Alice Onion is the STEM Advisor and Emma Barker is the Project Director.

There will also be two STEM forum face to face events every year which will be organised by the Nord Anglia Events Team.

Sir Brian Follett is the Chair for the STEM Advisory Forum. He brings with him vast knowledge and experience in the education arena and particularly in the STEM subject fields.

An Inner circle of members of the STEM Advisory Forum work together to make strategic decisions about the operation of the forum, for example concerning new discussion stimuli and face to face events.
