Many thanks for the responses and ideas for the Diploma in Science:
The proposed rationale and purpose
We particularly like the purpose "to provide an alternative means of developing scientific skills and understanding which are beneficial to students and provide the enthusiasm and basis for the next steps in their career/life choices".
Themes and topics
We like the emphasis on "science as a way of working/philosophy". The consultation that finished on 15th October was split about using themes, but felt that topics relating to contemporary issues, questions and challenges would be more appropriate.
Existing science provision
(a) There is strong support for placing greater emphasis on practical work. This would focus on how scientists work (the skills, knowledge and understanding) and should lead to employment/training or further study/higher education. (b) The diploma will be designed with clear links to mathematics. (c) The diploma will provide opportunities for students to personalise their learning, through the extended project, work experience and additional and specialist learning.
Work-related learning activities
There is strong support for the diploma to be a work-related qualification. The example from the forum is helpful and any others would be welcomed.
With thanks,
Hugh Lawlor, Chair of the Diploma in Science Development Partnership
