Increased numbers of students taking A level and Further Mathematics | Rises in the numbers taking Further Mathematics (FM) have been even more dramatic than those in the A level. The FM numbers almost doubled between 2003 and 2009 are predicted to go up by another quarter in the next two years. What are the implications for mathematics undergraduate entry?

I have been thinking about reasons for the steep rise in FM and A level maths numbers. I wonder whether the National Numeracy Strategy has contributed. The dates of the rises provide strong circumstantial evidence That the Strategy has had an impact. The cohort that sat their A level in 2005 were subject to the Primary Numeracy Strategy in just their last year at primary school. Each cohort after that has more of the Strategy in their background. By the time we get to the 2012 cohort, those young people will have experienced the Strategy right through the years of compulsory education. Maybe we will see a plateau in the numbers at that point.
